Update # 2 — John Kelleher Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail for Mission Manna

May 31st, 2011

700 Mile Mark

John has nearly reached his goal of 700 miles and is getting ready to hit the High Sierras tomorrow. Apparently they are about to get record snowfall for May/June.

He is in a fair amount of pain, but its tolerable. He will be out of touch for the next 3-4 weeks. Let’s all hold him in our thoughts as he traverses this unfriendly terrain. Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Cleaner Water For Haiti

May 9th, 2011

Mission Manna recently upgraded our biosand water filtration systems to include an additional stage to prevent the spread of the cholera virus. We will continue to use this Klorfasil system as long as cholera remains a concern in Haiti.

As a measure of how strongly Mission Manna feels about clean water being essential to wellness in Haiti, we have also hired another employee to administer this program. We are extremely grateful for the vision and support that we receive from so many people so that we can continue to provide wider ranging care in Haiti. As always, mesi anpil.

Distribution of Rabbits in Montrouis

May 9th, 2011

This past weekend, Mission Manna’s Garry Maurice held training seminars for parents and children in Montrouis, where he instructed the families in caring for and best

use of rabbits for nutrition and income. He then distributed two-dozen breeding pairs and gave further instructions on building hutches.

Mission Manna has now distributed three-dozen pairs of rabbits, roughly half to the internally displaced people living on our property and the remainder to families who are monitored by our community health agents. We are very pleased to see this program moving rapidly forward and expect to see measurable results soon.

Mission Manna thanks all of you who have and continue to support our projects in Haiti. Mesi anpil.

Reigning Sound Headlines Mission Manna’s Goat & Rabbit Benefit at the Grey Eagle June 24 Supporting On-Going, Decade-Long Health Efforts in Haiti

May 4th, 2011

Asheville vintage garage rock band Reigning Sound and indie punk rockers Wooden Toothe play the Grey Eagle on Friday, June 24 at 8:00 p.m. to support Mission MANNA’s on-going, decade-long education and relief efforts in Haiti. $10 minimum donation and raffle with prizes from: Harvest Records, LaZoom Bus Tours, Wedge Brewery, and Blue Ribbon Hair Salon.

Funds from the show will support sustainable medical, health and nutrition efforts in four Haitian communities.

Mission MANNA, a regional non-profit comprised of doctors, nurses and citizens from Western North Carolina, has been providing ongoing medical care for malnourished children and nutritional education for adults in and around the town of Montrouis for more than a decade. Mission MANNA volunteers pay their own travel to Haiti to set up clinics, allowing early 100% of funds to go directly to Haiti.

“Our goal for Mission MANNA is to make ourselves obsolete,” says Todd Kaderabek, Mission MANNA Chairperson, “by working with our Haitian community partners to build sustainable medical, health and nutrition infrastructures that function without our efforts.”

In addition to the medical efforts for children, two of the ways the organization is supporting sustainable health and nutrition efforts is through supporting the creation of jobs and food sources, and through clean water efforts.

Sustainable Nutrition Project: Goats & Rabbits as Food and Income

In addition to the doctors and nurses who are invited and pay-their-own way to set up medical clinics in the communities, Mission MANNA works with local Haitians, employed by the organization, to raise goats and rabbits as a sustainable method to improve nutrition and create income.

Water Filter Project: Cholera Eradication

Water filters are essential in ending the cholera epidemic in Haiti. Essential to overall health in any community, Mission MANNA works with their partnered Haitian communities to provide clean, parasite-free water.

Mission MANNA is grateful for their Event Sponsors: Reigning Sound, Wooden Toothe, The Hands of Sean Perry, Inc., Harvest Records, Wedge Brewery, LaZoom Bus Tours, Blue Ribbon Hair Salon.

Financial contributions to Mission MANNA will be allocated to Mission MANNA’s efforts to provide health and nutrition relief and education in four communities in Haiti. Mission MANNA is a grass roots organization with very little expense related to overhead and staffing.

Long before the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti, the country struggled with meeting the basic infrastructural, nutritional and medical needs of its people. The poorest country in the Western hemisphere, more than one third of Haiti’s 9 million people are under the age of 15. The continued state of political unrest, which intermittently (and currently) freezes life and business in the country’s port areas, makes life for most all of Haitians difficult. Consequently over 80% of the Haitian people live in poverty; many without access to clean water, health care, proper lodging, or an adequate food supply.

Statistics of Malnutrition in Haiti

• One in 10 children dies before the age of 5
• Malnutrition is the leading cause of death in children
• One third of 1 year olds show signs of severe growth retardation
• Forty percent of all 5 year olds have stunted growth and brain development
• Malnutrition contributes to 60% of all deaths in children

The Effects of Malnutrition

• Poor weight gain and impaired linear growth
• Impairment of the immune system
• Behavior changes — apathy, anxiety, depression
• Developmental delay
• Permanent cognitive deficits

Update #1 – John Kelleher Pacific Crest Trail Hike For Mission Manna

May 2nd, 2011

Hello folks! This is Laura, John’s friend who is helping to organize your generous donations to Mission Manna in honor of John’s hike.

Thank You!

First of, THANK YOU!! As a volunteer with Mission Manna, I’ve seen firsthand how your donations go directly to the people of Haiti.

I received an e-mail from John last week when he had stopped in the small town of Julian to resupply. He was in good spirits. Attached are the pics he sent. The wire figure was made by his hiking partner, who is affectionately known as Bigfoot.

40 Sponsors and Counting

Right now we have 40 sponsors for John, but could use all of the help we can get! If you feel so inclined, please forward this link to your family and friends who might be interested in donating to a local, grass-roots effort to help Haiti.

Thank you so much for your willingness to contribute and I will be in touch with further updates from John as I receive them.
